Early Life

Ferdinand Magellan was born in 1480 in Sabrosa in northern Portugal. His family was very poor. They owned a farm away from the sea. After his parents died, when he was around 10 years old, he became a page to Queen Leonor of Portugal because of his family's heritage. In the court, he learned about many explorers and about navigating ships. His very first time at sea was when he was 25, in 1505. In 1511 he was on an expedition to conquer Melaka. As he grew up he was in many battles, including The Battle of Cannanore, where he was injured.

Where Magellan Explored

Ferdinand Magellan's journey of 1519–1522 was the first expedition to sail from the Atlantic Ocean into the Pacific Ocean.Magellan set out to go around the globe. He was the 1st European to discover the Philippians. He sailed on the Trinidad and 4 other ships. The ships names were the Victoria, San Antonio, Conception,and Santiago. Magellan sailed to the Pacific islands while using compasses,cross-staffs, hour glasses, and an astrolabe. He named the Pacific Ocean because of the calm, quiet, and peaceful waters. During their journey the Portuguese took over the Trinidad so they sailed mainly on the Victoria. Magellan did not complete the entire voyage, he was killed during the Battle of Mactan in the Philippines.

What was the Significance of his Journey

The significance of Magellan's journey is that it would open up the spice route. Magellan also completed the first travel around the world. It also brought back some special spices including cinnamon and so on. They won the battle of the spice trade over the other country's and explorers.Their goal was to find many spices to pay the wars with the Turkish Empire.He also discovered the Strait of Magellan, that was near the bottom of South America. During his journey he discovered many animals, like penguins and llamas.
